Very few taxi drivers in China speak any language except Putonghua (Mandarin). Before you leave your hotel ask the Concierge to write down for the taxi driver your destination in Chinese and ask about the approximate fare. Please show the destination in Chinese to the taxi driver. Keep the receipts from your taxi journeys. It is the only way that you can track a taxi if something is left in the vehicle.
If taxis try to negotiate a fixed fare, be aware that it is your choice to ask for the meter.
